John Pease is the Group Director Governance at St John of God Health Care Inc, Australia’s largest Catholic not‐for‐profit, private health care group which was established in Western Australia in 1895.  John’s legal experience covers both commercial law and dispute resolution, including intellectual property, banking and finance, debt recovery, insolvency, trade practices, higher education, corporate governance and energy, building and construction and infrastructure.  He also has substantial in‐house legal practice management experience.

This seminar discusses the ethical obligations of lawyers as they apply to in-house-counsel. It will be of interest both to those lawyers working in-house, and also to lawyers who advise organizations with in-house counsel.

Course Details

This ethics seminar will address one of the most prominent ethical issues which continues to face in-house lawyers – maintaining independence.

It will weigh up the degree of professional detachment in the relationship between client and in-house counsel, as well as examine the role of the employment agreement in that relationship.

It will cover the duties of in-house lawyers, how to maintain independence in delivering advice, being aware of the separation between legal advice and commercial advice and strategies to ensure privilege attaches.
